We are engaged!

On July 4, JR proposed! We are over the moon, and having so much fun celebrating with family and friends. Want to know how he did it?!

I was down in Charleston, SC for the holiday weekend. My mom's birthday was this week, and all she wanted for her birthday was some time with the girls! So we left the boyfriends at home, and my sisters and I spent some QT with my mom and dad. We had a great weekend, and I flew out early Monday afternoon to head back to Indianapolis.

JR and I have been SO busy this summer, and this weekend is one of our few weekends at home. So when I was on the plane on Monday, I let my mind wander a bit and questioned whether the engagement might happen this weekend. But I didn't want to get myself too excited, so I turned my attention back to my magazine.

I landed in Indy and JR picked me up at the airport. We went home, I showered, and got ready for dinner. We had no groceries (a result of JR being home alone all weekend) so I suggested we go to the bar at Harry & Izzy's (one of our very favorite restaurants) for some filet sliders and a cocktail. We sat at the bar and talked and laughed. I tried to get JR to stay out for one more drink, but he said he wanted to go home and watch the fireworks. We live downtown and the condo we rent has a perfect view. So we left!

There's an expensive bottle of wine we like and because its price tag is above $15, we have only ever had it at Christmas. It's our little treat to ourselves. So when we got home and JR casually said "I wish we had some Caymus right now," I sarcastically responded, "well it'd be nice if we had some." At that he said "we do!" and pulled out a bottle. I have to admit, I still wasn't expecting an engagement. I thought he was doing something nice for us on the 4th of July since we hadn't seen each other all weekend. I even joked that Caymus could be our one-bottle-every-6-month treat (Christmas in December, Independence Day in July).  I went and washed my face and put on an old pair of comfy sweats and an ugly green t-shirt.

We opened the bottle and got ready for the fireworks.

Then I realized the fireworks were about to start and Ruby Louise (our dog) hadn't gone outside to go potty for the night. I worried about all the noise, so I took her outside. However, there was too much excitement going on around her and she wouldn't go! So I came back inside and JR was laughing. He said "she wouldn't go outside because she just peed in the closet." I frustratingly grabbed a towel and carpet cleaner and we laughed about poor Ru being so scared of the fireworks that she decided to do her duty inside.

As soon as I got done cleaning it up (and washing my hands), I walked out of the bathroom. At that moment JR came up to me and grabbed my hands. Now, JR has been known to act like he's about to propose, then bend down and tie his shoe. He thinks it's hilarious (insert eye roll). So I didn't quite know what was going on. Then he said "I got us a nice bottle of wine because I thought we would have something else to celebrate tonight..."

I realized what was happening, started crying, and pretty much blacked out. I don't quite remember everything that he said, but I will never, ever forget the look on his face and in his eyes. I will never ever forget how I felt when I realized what was going on.

We took a few minutes to be excited and watch the fireworks off the balcony, and then we started sharing the news! It has been an amazing, fun, exciting whirlwind ever since.

A few years ago I went through a period of time when I didn't know if I would be happy again (I know, dramatic). But I really couldn't picture ever getting married or having a family. And JR changed all of that. He's stuck by me through everything, and I can't wait to start this new adventure with him. He's more than my fiance and best friend, he's my partner in life and I love him so much!

I promise to keep the wedding posts to a minimum. We want to have a relatively short engagement and a fun, easy wedding in Indianapolis. (Venue and vendor suggestions are welcome!) For now, we are enjoying being engaged, happy, and in love.
Our engagement story is perfectly uneventful. It was quiet, casual, and very much us. We spent the night laughing, joking, and talking about the future. I couldn't have asked for anything more perfect.

Thanks for letting me share our story!

  2. I remember meeting JR for the first time in Broadripple. You casually gave him a hug and said good bye and we left to go home for the night. To think two years later you two will be exchanging vows is beautiful! I am so happy for you Abby Elizabeth Foster, thank you showing me what true love looks like, feelings like, and acts like! You two are amazing individuals and together.

  3. Congrats to you and JR, Abby! I love that it was such an unexpected moment. I'm sure your wedding will be beautiful, but I had a destination wedding so I'm a little out of the loop on suggested venues, etc. We did have a reception at the Mavris downtown when we returned, but I kept everything pretty low key.
