Memorial Day in Indy

May is a special month in Indiana, and I can't believe Memorial Day weekend is next week! I always think back to the start of summer break back in school, and vividly remember lawns decked out with black and white checkered flags. The Indy 500 brings such a cool vibe to the city -- people are out and about, heading down to the track, participating in all the race festivities. JR and I finished our first mini marathon a few weekends ago, we'll watch the 500 Festival parade travel past our apartment downtown, and we will be attending the 100th running of the Indy 500 on Sunday the29th!

The (sometimes) bad thing about May in Indiana is the weather is entirely unpredictable. I remember my very first Indy 500 -- my childhood friend Kim and I spent most of the day freezing cold, huddling under the bleachers, trying to avoid the rain. But then just a few years back, the heat from the black top made the temperature feel well over 100 degrees...not to mention the humidity.

This year, May has taken a little bit of a turn and has been on the chilly side lately! That's why this little outfit has been one of my favorites for running around on the weekend. I've officially jumped on the bandana bandwagon (Madewell has some super cute styles right now for only $12!) and I'm thinking I'll probably wear something very similar to a cookout or two between now and the end of the month.

Whatever you're doing this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, I hope you're spending time with the people you love. I'm so excited for my extended family to make the trip to Indy. We spend 3 full days drinking wine, eating burgers, and sharing LOTS of laughs. Race weekend has always been one of my very favorite times of the year, and I hope you take some time to reflect on why we have the opportunity for the long holiday weekend. Hug the people you love a little tighter and think about all the families who have lost their loved ones fighting in the armed forces. Take a little time over this next week to reflect and show gratitude for this beautiful country which we call home, for the freedom that we enjoy and daily take for granted, and for all of those who have sacrificed so much.

Happy early Memorial Day, friends!

  1. This place was very comfortable. Restrooms were decent. Coming here with my friends was an amazing experience. These venues in Los Angeles are my favorite place now, because of its excellent food, perfect lighting, vibrant atmosphere and great ventilation.
